Massinga District

Geographical Location
Massinga district is a district in the central province of Inhambane, Mozambique. It has geographical boundaries, with the northern districts of Vilanculos and Inhassoro, east to the Indian Ocean, south to the district Morrumbene and west to the district Funhalouro.

Area and Population
Massinga district has an area of 410km² 7 and a population of 186,292, according to preliminary results of the 2007 Census, resulting in a population density of 25.14 inhabitants / km². The population recorded in 2007 represents a decrease of 1.1% compared to 186 650 inhabitants registered in the 1997 Census.

Sources of Income
Agriculture is the dominant activity and involves the majority of local households. The main food crops of the family sector are maize, cassava, peanuts and beans. The most important livestock in the district, for the consumption of households and marketing are chickens, goats and ducks.

Massinga Town
Massinga Town is the busy district capital of Massinga and is a very convenient stocking up point, with a number of shops, stalls, petrol station and garage. There are several ATM machines, including the Millennium BIM and BCI at the southern end of the town.

Morrungulo Beach
Morrungulo Beach approximately 8km north of Massinga is the sign post indicating the turn-off for Morrungulo Beach (Praia de Morrungulo), which is a stunning stretch of coastline.

Pomene Beach
Pomene Beach and the Pomene Reserve, located on the coast roughly halfway between Inhambane and Vilankulo off the N1. The turn-off from the N1 highway is about 11km north of Massinga, and is signposted immediately after the Morrungulo turn-off. Pomene, is the location of a colonial-era beach resort, and is known for its fishing and birding. The area is part of the Pomene Reserve which was gazette in 1972 with 20,000 hectares to protect the mangrove ecosystems, dune forests and marine life of the area, including dugongs and turtles. The reserve has been long neglected, but has recently received renewed attention. The beach is extremely beautiful, especially near the point by the lighthouse. For those visitors who are have a special interest in birding, or discovering rare insects, Pomene offers the environment to catch a glimpse at something you do not see at home.
